Bubble tea originated in the early 1980's at a small tea stand in Taiwan as concession owners competed to earn the business of local school children. One day a lady began adding different fruit flavors to her teas and the children loved it. When adding the flavors, the tea needed to be shaken and this caused bubbles in the drink, which became known as "Bubble Tea". Then in 1983, Liu Han-Chieh, introduced a new fad to his teas and "Boba Tea" was invented, by adding tapioca pearls to his popular teas. Then in the 90's, Taiwanese migrants brought the popular drink to the United States, initially in California through regions like LA and it began to spread to areas with large East Asian populations. One thing is for certain, today Boba and Bubble Tea are not a fad. It's a TREND and it's ADDICTIVE!
